徒 is composed of 彳(step with the left foot, the picture of a road), 土(clay, dust) and 止(stop, the picture of a foot). 徒 is only composed of 土 and 止 before, which means a foot splashing mud during walking, then 彳 is added to emphasize the meaning of walking, and also distinguishes itself from 走.
