蛹 is composed of 虫(insect) and 甬. 甬 is the picture of a bucket, a bucket is a container. When an insect transforms from a larva to an adult, it will go through an inactive stage, during such stage, an insect will stay inside a hard shell which acts as a container, so 蛹 is used to represent this stage.
