蜜 is composed of 宓 (silent) and 虫 (insect). 宓 conveys the idea of an extremely enclosed place and carries the sense of crowding. Therefore, 蜜 conveys the idea of an insect that lives in a crowded and enclosed space. Later, it came to refer to the sweet liquid that this insect produces by gathering the nectar from flowers.
