須 is composed of 頁 (head, page) and 彡 (shape, hair). 須 depicts a human head with a beard, originally meaning beard or whiskers. This meaning was later taken over by 鬚. In ancient times, adult males were expected to grow beards, so 須 also came to mean necessity or must.
