敦 is composed of 享 (enjoy) and 攵 (strike). 亨 is a pictograph of an ancient ancestral temple, while 攵 is a pictograph of a hand holding a stick-like weapon and represents teaching or instructing. In ancient times, the ancestral temple was not only a place for offering sacrifices to the ancestors, but also the spiritual center that maintained family unity, transmitted values, and regulated the behavior of clan members. Therefore, 敦 conveys the idea of the teachings of the ancestors, and means to supervise, to be harmonious, or to be sincere.
