敬 is composed of 茍 (introspection) and 攵 (tap, rap). 茍 depicts a Qiang (羌) people kneeling respectfully, it has already had the meaning of respect. 攵 is the picture of holding a rod and hitting someone, in order to earn his obedience and respect.
