負 is composed of a variant of 人 (person) and 貝 (shell). It depicts a person carrying valuables on their shoulder or back, with the load so heavy that it touches the ground, and means to bear or to take on. In addition, because the weight of the valuables exceeds what a person can bear, 負 also carries the meaning of owing or being in debt.
