賃 is composed of 任 (duty) and 貝 (shell). 任 means duty or responsibility, while 貝 represents money. Therefore, the original meaning of 賃 is to hire someone with money to do work for oneself. Later, it also came to mean renting or borrowing something for one’s own use.
