遲 is composed of the radical 辵 (walk) and 犀 (rhino). 辵 represents walking. Therefore, 遲 describes the way a rhinoceros walks. A rhinoceros has a huge, cumbersome body and thick, tough skin, making its movements clumsy. From this, 遲 came to mean slow, and also carries the meaning of not early or late.
