彔 depicts a water-drawing device set up over a well. In ancient times, clean water sources were not easy to come by. To effectively distribute the water, the ancients would carve marks on the well frame to record the amount of water taken by each household. Therefore, 彔 carries the meaning of recording, but this meaning was later replaced by 錄, and 彔 nowadays only means to carve wood.
