彖 is composed of 彑 (pig head) and 豕 (pig). 彑 depicts a pig’s head with its snout protruding upward, while 豕 is a pictograph of a pig. Therefore, the original meaning of 彖 is a pig’s snout, and it also broadly refers to the protruding mouth of an animal. Later, this meaning was taken over by the character 喙. Nowadays, 彖 is used to refer to the statements in the the Book of Changes that determine the meaning of a hexagram.
