彘 is composed of a variant of 彖 (pig head) and 矢 (arrow). 彖 depicts a pig with its mouth pointing upward, while 矢 is a pictograph of an arrow. Therefore, 彘 depicts a wild boar that has been shot by an arrow. In ancient times, pigs had not yet been domesticated and could only be obtained through hunting.
