害 is composed of 宀 (roof), 丯 (surround), and 口 (mouth). 宀 represents the household or family, 丯 represents damage or harm, and 口 represents speech or words. Therefore, 害 conveys the idea of words that cause damage within the home. Later, it came to broadly mean any form of damage, destruction, or hindrance.
