餘
residue, remaining, surplus
餘 is composed of the radical 食 (food) and 余 (surname, me). 余 depicts the act of pulling up or weeding small grass, with its original meaning being surplus or remainder. As 余 gradually developed other secondary meanings, 餘 was created specifically to preserve this original sense. In ancient times when resources were scarce, having leftover food signified prosperity and abundance.
