陶 is composed of the radical 阜 (mound) and 匋 (pottery). 阜 represents high ground or a hillside, while 匋 refers to earthenware vessels. Firing earthenware requires high-quality clay, which is why many kilns and earthen chambers for baking tiles and pottery were built along hill slopes.
