奢 is composed of 大 (big, large) and 者 (this, person). 大 carries the meaning of excess or too much, while 者 depicts a pile of firewood being used to start a fire for cooking, and from the pile of firewood it extends to the meaning of gathering or accumulation. When accumulation becomes excessive, it turns into overabundance. Therefore, 奢 is used to represent extravagance or luxury.
