夬 is a pictograph depicting a hand holding a notched ring-shaped jade artifact. Originally, 夬 referred to this notched jade ring, but this meaning was later taken over by 玦. The jade artifact resembles a ring broken open, and since jade is hard, it breaks cleanly and decisively. Thus, 夬 also means resolute or without hesitation, a meaning later taken over by 決. Nowadays, 夬 is no longer used independently and only serves as a component in other characters.
