雷 is composed of the radical of 雨 (rain) and the simplified form of 畾 (thunder, pile). 雨 depicts heavenly meteorological phenomena such as rain, while 畾 is pictographically three wheels, and since rolling wheels produce a rumbling sound, 雷 conveys the idea of the tremendous booming noise that follows lightning—and means thunder.
