且
structural word but no meaning
且 is the pictograph of a chopping board, with the two horizontal lines in the middle representing the incisions or cut marks made by a knife, thus conveying the idea of its cutting or slicing function; its original meaning was later taken over by the character 俎. 且 is now borrowed as a function word (conjunction meaning “and,” “moreover,” or “also”), perhaps because when cutting things, the chopping board always remains at the very bottom as the foundation.
