丂 is a pictograph depicting a walking stick or crutch. A walking stick is used by the elderly to aid in walking, implying old age or frailty. This meaning was later taken over by 考 (examine, old) and 朽 (decay, old). Nowadays, 丂 is no longer used independently and only serves as a component in other characters.
