諒 is composed of 言 (speech) and 京 (capital, high). 京 is a pictograph of a tall building, carrying the meaning of grandeur or primacy. When speaking with others, sincerity is of utmost importance. Speaking sincerely will earn understanding and trust from others. Even if one makes a mistake, sincerely admitting it will lead to forgiveness, as represented by 諒.
