段 is composed of a variant of 石 (stone) and 殳 (bludgeon). Since 殳 refers to a weapon capable of hammering or pounding, 段 visually depicts hammering a rock or stone. When a rock is hammered and smashed, it splits apart into several pieces—thus using 段 to represent a classifier or unit for objects that are divided into distinct portions, segments, or sections.
