respect, high

崇 is composed of 山 (mountain) and 宗 (ancestor). 宗 means ancestor. In the minds of the ancients, the status of ancestors was higher than everything else. Therefore, 崇 conveys the idea of a lofty and steep mountain, and also indicates that the status of ancestors is as high as a mountain. From this, it extends to the meaning of respect or reverence.
