屵
coast, shore
屵 is composed of 山 (mountain) and 厂 (cliff). 山 refers to high ground, while 厂 depicts a steep cliffside on a mountain, originally meaning a cliff and carrying the sense of a boundary or edge. Thus, 屵 refers to high ground by a mountain or waterside. The meaning of 屵 was later taken over by 岸 (shore, bank), and nowadays, 屵 is no longer used independently.
