尌 is composed of a variant of 屮 (grass), 豆 (pea), and 寸(inch). 屮 represents plants, 豆 is a pictograph of a type of food vessel, and 寸 is a pictograph of a hand that also carries the meaning of standards or rules. Plants grow upward, while 豆 was an ancient ritual vessel that displayed one’s rank and status, so it had to be carefully placed to ensure it would not topple. From this, 尌 came to mean to set upright or to erect. However, this sense was later taken over by the character 樹. Nowadays, 尌 is rarely used independently and mostly appears as a component in other characters.
