略 is composed of 田 (field) and 各 (each). 田 refers to boundaries or territory, while 各 carries the meaning of each or separately. Therefore, 略 conveys the idea of feudal lords each demarcating their own boundaries and managing their land. From this, it extended to the meanings of planning and strategy. If one wishes to carry out a plan quickly and effectively, the plan must be simple and easy to understand. From this, 略 also came to mean a summary or outline.
