由 depicts the process of oil droplets congealing into fat. Its original meaning was oil, but this sense was later replaced by the character 油. Since fat accumulates and solidifies from oil droplets, the two are mutually cause and effect. For this reason, the modern meaning of 由 has extended to “cause,” “by,” or “from”, indicating origin or reason.
