廡 is composed of 广 (wide) and 無 (none). 广 is a pictograph of a large house, while 無 means “not have” or “without.” Therefore, 廡 conveys the idea of a large empty house. Later, it came to broadly refer to buildings in general, and also specifically to the side rooms on either side of a main hall.
