獨

single, alone

獨 is composed of the radical of 犬 (dog) and 蜀 (Sichuan). 犬 represents animals, while 蜀 is a pictograph of a cobra. When a cobra encounters other animals, it feels threatened and raises the front half of its body, standing upright like a vertical stick. Therefore, 獨 is used to mean single or alone.
