兵 is composed of 斤 (Catty) and a variant of 廾 (join hands). 斤 is a pictograph of an axe, while 廾 is a pictograph of two hands. Therefore, 兵 conveys the idea of holding an axe in the hands. Its original meaning is a weapon, and later it extended to the meanings of soldier and army.
