壬 is composed of a variant of 人 (person) and a variant of 土 (earth). It depicts a person standing on top of an earthen mound, indicating being higher than others, and carries the meaning of pulling out or standing upright. However, this meaning was later taken over by the character 挺. In addition, a person standing on an earthen mound can also convey the idea of holding fast to one’s post, so 壬 also meant duty or responsibility, but this meaning was later taken over by the character 任. Nowadays, 壬 is no longer used independently and only appears as a component in other characters.
