士
bachelor, scholar
士 is a pictograph of an axe-like weapon, originally meaning a person skilled in martial arts and possessing strength. Protecting home and country was a significant responsibility, earning respect, so 士 later became an honorific term for people. As society progressed, scholarly achievements became more valued than martial prowess, and 士 also came to represent scholars or intellectuals.
