曾
once, already
曾 depicts a steamer pot. Steam rises from the bottom water container, passes through the middle perforated tier, and cooks the food above. Because the steamer consists of layered compartments stacked together, 曾 extended to express layering or repetition—eventually coming to denote the past or completed actions ("already"). Its original meaning as the vessel itself was later taken over by 甑.
