勝 is composed of 朕 (emperor's self-title) and 力 (strength). 朕 depicts the scene of two hands paddling oars to propel a boat forward, conveying the idea of exerting effort to move forward. When one puts forth full strength in doing anything, one is bound to surpass others; this is the meaning that 勝 expresses.
