助 is composed of 且(and, yet) and 力(strength). 且 is the pictograph of a chopping board; although a chopping board cannot cut meat like a knife, it enables the cutting process to be smoother and safer, conveying the idea of assistance or help, while 力 highlights the board’s effective power in supporting that action.
