I, emperor's self-title

depicts the scene of two hands paddling oars to propel a boat forward. A boat can only move upstream against the current through human effort with oars, and the person is the central figure controlling the boat; thus originally served as a first-person pronoun for “I” or “me.” Later, it gradually became reserved exclusively as the self-referent used by the emperor.
