帖
note, paste
帖 is composed of 巾 (cloth) and 占 (divination). 巾 represents fabric or cloth, while 占 refers to the act of divining by observing cracks on a tortoise shell, considered messages from heaven, thus implying information or messages. In ancient times, people wrote on cloth to convey messages, so 帖 originally meant a written note or letter (especially for good news). Later, it was borrowed to mean to stick or paste, similar to 貼.
