厓 is composed of 厂 (cliff) and 圭 (jade tablet). 厂 depicts a steep cliffside on a mountain, while 圭 is formed from two 土 (soil) characters, indicating that this cliff is not only elevated but may also have falling earth clumps. Thus, 厓 originally meant the edge or side of a mountain, a meaning later taken over by 崖. Nowadays, 厓 is not used independently and only serves as a component in other characters.
