舍 is composed of a variant of 合 (together) and a variant of 屮 (grass). 合 is a pictograph of a box and means to gather and store, while 屮 refers to grass. Therefore, 舍 means a place for gathering and storing dry grass. In ancient times, the dwellings of poor families were built with dry grass and used dry grass as bedding. From this, 舍 came to mean a simple dwelling, and is also used to refer to a place for raising livestock.
