臱 is composed of variant of 自(self) and 旁(side). 自 is the picture of a nose, while 旁 has the meaning of side and border, ancient Chinese criminal has tattoo on his nose, and will be sent to faraway border also. Therefore, 臱 has already had the meaning of side and border, but now we seldom use 臱, but 邊 instead.
