房 is composed of a variant of 戶 (household) and 方 (square). 戶 is a pictograph of a single door, carrying the meaning of a household. 方 carries the meaning of standards or specifications. Ancient buildings had to conform to specific standards and regulations; hence, 房 came to mean an entire dwelling or an individual room within a dwelling.
