巟 is composed of 亡(to die, to flee) and the variant of 川(river).巟 is the picture of a man trapped at the corner, while his way is blocked by a river, which show there is no escape for such man, thus extends to the meaning of desolate and shortage, now we won’t use 巟, but 荒 instead.
