取 is composed of 耳 (ear) and 又 (hand). 又 depicts a hand, making 取 a picture of a hand holding or grasping an ear. In ancient times, soldiers would cut off the left ears of defeated enemy soldiers to keep count of their battle achievements; this practice later extended to the general meanings of to seize, capture, obtain, or take.
