爿 is a pictograph of a bed, depicting the bed frame and its board, originally meaning a bed and extending to imply a flat surface. This meaning was later taken over by 牀. Nowadays, 爿 is not used independently and only serves as a radical or component in other characters. Additionally, 爿 can be understood as the left half of a divided 木 (wood), symmetrical to 片.
