臣
official
臣 is a pictograph depicting a wide-open, protruding eye. Captives, filled with fear, would have wide, bulging eyes, so the original meaning of 臣 was a captive. It later extended to mean a person who serves or works for a ruler. Serving a ruler requires extreme caution and constant vigilance, causing the eyes to remain wide open and alert, as reflected by 臣.
