犀 is composed of a variant of 尾 (tail) and 牛 (cow, ox). Therefore, 犀 conveys the idea of a large animal whose back resembles that of an ox but is not an ox. This animal has a horn on its nose, so 犀 also carries the meaning of sharpness.
