幹 is composed of 倝 (fluttering flags) and 干 (interfere). 倝 is a pictograph of the sun rising along a flagpole at sunrise, while 干 depicts a shield placed on a support frame. Both carry the meaning of support. Therefore, 幹 conveys the idea of the main part that is sufficient to support the whole of a thing.
