歐 is composed of 區 (region) and 欠 (owe). 區 conveys the idea of containing many different things, while 欠 depicts a person opening their mouth to exhale and represents making a sound. Therefore, 歐 conveys the idea of producing a sound rich in content. Its original meaning is to sing, but this sense was later taken over by the character 謳. Nowadays, 歐 is used to refer to Europe.
