骸 is composed of 骨 (bone) and 亥 (12th earthly branch). 亥 depicts the skeleton of an animal’s body. However, as 亥 developed other meanings, the character 骸 was separately created to express that original sense. Since the skeleton supports an animal’s body, 骸 is also used to refer to the body itself.
