野 is composed of 里 (village) and 予 (give). 里 means a place where people live together, while 予 carries the meaning of supplying or sending out and extends to the sense of expansion. Therefore, 野 conveys the idea of the expanded and extended part of a village; this area has few trees and little human habitation, and is broad and flat.
